Doing Stuff…

I haven’t written much at all…that usually means that we are out and about (on the farm) doing stuff.  The pond is completely dry now; this usually happens every year except for one year which was an unusually wet-dry season.  You would think that the geese would be up in arms with the loss of their swimming pond but they seem to have forgotten about it.  These days, the different goosie factions are securing and taking over designated bucket areas like a bunch of mafia geese.  It can be quite entertaining as each group guards their water stash jealously in the usual goosie-aggressive way…just don’t get caught in the cross-fire!!

Dry Season Pond.

We had to save our tilapia frys (I know…it sounds like fried fish but that’s the technical term for them according to size…just means that they are teeny weeny!!) ; we do this every year when the pond dries out.  This time, we had a tonne of them…if you look at the above picture of the pond site, there is a smaller dug out pond on the right side…this was a Gnome idea and it works really well…when the pond dries up, the last bit of water ends up in this little pond with all the fish.  When this happens, Gnome simply goes down and harvests the little fishes with a hand net.  Initially, we had made all sorts of complicated traps but we have found that this is the best hassle-free method of collecting fish.  The fish are in a big container right now being fed chopped greens:

Tilapia Fry.

The water was getting quite murky so Gnome had made a swirl filter with a bucket and bits:

Swirl Filter Top.

The fish water is pumped up through the top pipe in the swirl filter; the middle pipe is the out-flow for the filtered water and  there is a lower pipe (which you can’t see) which can be opened to release all the gunk.  Yes….you’ve got it!!  This is the start of our aqua-ponics project…:)

Swirl Filter Front.

Anyway, Gnome says there are too many fishes in the container so we have to start harvesting them.  I am thinking of making an anchovy type of thing with them…I don’t know how to do this so I will have read up on the preservation method.  Have a great weekend every-one!!

Farm Update.

Munchkin.Froggie.JumpingWe have been hearing all sorts of weather predictions and looking at reports on the Internet with forecasts of hot, dry weather…forever (well, it feels like that anyway).  This morning we were sitting down with our cups of tea (can’t take the Scottish out of either of us…still like a cup of tea to hit the spot)  and lo and behold!  Grey clouds gathered right over us and it started raining.  What a relief!  It wasn’t  torrential but it was enough for the plants and trees to quench their thirst for a wee while.  This is one of the longest dry seasons that we can remember.  Every year, the season tends to end abruptly and we are usually left thinking,

“Hey, hang on a few more days…or weeks…we haven’t done this and that..we haven’t done everything on our dry season list!”

Munchkin.Another.Funny.Shot

Well, this year, it’s hanging on for a while so we have no excuses but to dig the trench in the pond…

Pond.

This is to allow a catchment area for the tilapia when the pond dries up every year.  We are doing it this year and Gnome is digging!

A lot of people wonder why we do our own work…a couple of ascetic wannabee farmers who like pain and suffering?

Together.Munchking.PointingThe truth is that we are actually both very healthy and fit from this lifestyle…a lifestyle that we like to promote to all our patients…we reckon that the only way to give advise is to do it (not just talk).

After digging a trench three feet wide and two feet deep today, Gnome said:

“Yes, I can eat as much as I want!”

Gnome.Self.Satisfied

Yes, indeed he can stuff his face with satisfaction with that smug look on his face!

Not So Dry!

Yippee!!  We had a good rain last night which filled up half of the tank.  And now it’s raining again so we should have the tank completely filled.  Good thing Gnome sorted this out:

We were so worried because the dry days seemed never-ending (it always feels like that every year).  At least now our poor shriveled tobacco plants will start growing again:

And the pond might start filling up…look…it has been reduced to a single puddle!

Hopefully with this extra bit of rain, our mangoes will get fat and juicy.

All the fruit trees on the farm will benefit from this splendid rain…what a relief!

A Pond For The Duckies!

Together

Everyday for the last two weeks, Gnome has been digging out a pond for the Duckies.  When Gnome was asked what machinery was used in the pond construction (I think they were expecting some sort of excavator in the answer) he replied with:

“A spade.”

Gnome Magic!

The pond is situated in the middle of the Zen garden and lined with rocks.  Since the weather has been so dry, we were a bit dubious over whether it would get filled with rainwater.  I mentioned to Gnome with a twinkle in my eye:

“…well, since it is a Zen Garden, can we fill the pond with sand and rake ripples into it?  Do you think the Duckies would notice?”

Munchkin.Cute.Shot

No need to worry though…we had a constant drizzle today and the pond is getting nicely filled up.

Oh, and we have to thank our doggy for helping Gnome every morning.  She apparently thinks that a wheelbarrow should be pulled along by grasping the wheel with her teeth and dragging it along.  What a funny dog she is!   Gnome couldn’t resist shouting out to me to take a photograph…this is a picture of her in action.

Pictures From The Farm.

Winter Time in Belize.
Winter Time in Belize.

Since we have been doing a super clean up of the farm in this fabulous weather (bright and sunny with no rain) I thought I would take this opportunity to share some pictures of the farm.  It is remarkable how great it looks when it is not all bushy with high grass!

When we first came to Belize, 10 years ago we ventured into the bush in search of rosewood seeds to start a grove on our farm.  Over years, there has been much logging of these magnificent trees and they are dwindling in number.  We have set up this grove as a “seed bank” so that there will still be opportunity to cultivate these trees in the future.  Our rosewood trees are looking good and gives a shaded place for a cool picnic area.

The first young fruits of the soursop have just started  which is a much-loved fruit of the Tropics:

And this is roseapple which tastes of rose petals.  They are actually very hard to spot because of the green colour…if only they would turn pink or red!  I think all of our resident birdies taste of roses since they are the ones eating most of them…

Last but not least, our lovely pond area where we would like to house a gaggle of geese!  One day, we shall have loads of geese a-honking in our pond!!

Coconut Feta Cheese Update and Gnome Project.

Munchkin.More.EatingLast week, I wrote about making coconut milk cheese – feta style…this is the update. After the three days of dry brining, I took out the cheese and cut it into pieces like so:

Coconut Feta Cheese.
Coconut Feta Cheese.

The cheese had dried to a firm consistency and so it was easy enough to cut without too much crumbling.  I then placed them in 7% brine; one jar with bay leaves and the second flavoured with whole black peppers.

I am going to leave the jars out at room temperature so that they can ferment further for two weeks.  After that, I will I will let them continue to ferment for several months in a cooler area (probably the refrigerator).  Hope they taste good after all the waiting!!

Gnome Update:

Gnome.Doing.Magic

Gnome has started on a project where he is digging out a small pond next to the house:

Pond Digging.

He has also started up some lotus seeds in a basin which have germinated and come up nicely:

Growing Lotus in Basin.

The plan is to have a lotus pond next to the house.  Apart from the beautiful flowers, we also want to grow them for food.  We would eventually like to make our own lotus paste to make Chinese sweets:

This was sent to us as a gift all the way from Singapore; I am saving it to make moon cake this year.  Also, lotus seeds are really tasty in Chinese soups…yes, you can actually buy these in Belize!

Dried Lotus Seeds.

Lotus root is also quite a treat and I would love to grow some of our own because I haven’t eaten it for over a decade since I came to Belize.  It will probably take over a year before we can harvest any to eat.

Aaaaargh…more waiting!!
