Water Everywhere!!

When it rains, it pours!!  Especially if you live down here in Toledo, Belize.  These are actually pictures from last week!  Surprisingly, it has dried up again(!) and it hasn’t rained for about 6 days now. Well, there was a lot of  water everywhere!!  Here are some pictures to show you  what we mean by a lot of water…

The duckie pond in the Zen coop is full again…we were supposed to re-do this one this year but did not find the time to get to it.  It is lined with thick construction plastic (which the duckies have scratched up) and then it has been lined with rocks.  When it rains everyday (which happens at this time of the year) it will get completely filled up like this.  As it gets drier, the water does leak out of the holes in the construction plastic so it doesn’t hold water perfectly.  We’ll have to sort this one out next year.

Duckie Pond.

This year the big pond did not dry up.  The water is high again…but the silly geese have forgotten that it exists again…we will have to lure them here with a corn trail…

Oh, and this year it has been re-stocked with tilapia thanks to Panda.  We can go fishin’ in the new year!!  (Panda’s doing okay by the way…last time we talked to him (which was a few days ago) he said that he felt fresh and ready to get on with things on the farm).

Pond.

These are puddles that are more like little ponds…so you can understand why we wear wellies all the time.

Okay, so we are still up to our ears in trying to finish last minute construction and the wood that we had bought (tambran) has got black mold growing on it already.  We still have to keep on going…rain or shine!!

Cold And Miserable Out Here!!

munchkin-amazed

The weather starts off kinda sunny and cheery in the morning and then by about early afternoon, black clouds move in and there is a huge downpour.  At least that has been the weather pattern for the last few days.  It ends up being really cold and miserable…reminds of good old Scottish weather!

Anyway, we all need to keep on going despite the greyness.  Here are some pictures from the farm taken on better sunnier days.  This one looks a bit startled but honestly, this is a happy, gurgling guinea pig:

Geese are fine with the rains and don’t really know what all the fuss is about:

Hurricane Alert!

TogetherIt’s the quiet before the storm; we  are preparing for Tropical Storm/ Hurricane Earl.  This one is really for friends and family because communications may be down for the next couple of days.  Well, we have everything boarded up, kerosene lights ready and plenty of food.  I baked a whole tonne of bread today too!  Gnome will hold a special meeting with the fowl this afternoon to remind them to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground…with demonstrations!  Got to get some humour in it otherwise we could easily whip ourselves up into a frenzy!!  Good Luck to all of us in this position!

Swaying Bamboo Technique.

Giant.Green.BambooWe have had heavy rains and we are surrounded by a sea of water, the Jacinto River is up and there are flood signs everywhere.  The river floods onto our road every year and it looks like this occurrence is imminent.  In addition to all this, the truck is behaving dodgy (oh how technical of me!) and the two tonne front gate is still done broke.  In other words we are on forced house arrest!

There was a downpour lastnight so we couldn’t even get anything done on the farm.  I was so frustrated and said to Gnome today:

“Aaaaaargh…the weather refuses to cooperate!  Everything is conspiring against us!”

Munchkin Sick and Feeling Sorry for Herself!

Gnome replied with an enigmatic smile:

“My dear, we must sway like the bamboo…learn to bend like the limbs of the bamboo…be flexible!”

Gnome.Another.Look.GreenIn response to this, I lifted my arms up in the air and flailed them from side to side.  Testily I said,

“Is that it???!!!  I don’t feel any better!!”

Munchkin.Another.Funny.ShotGnome:

“No dear you are not doing it right…you need to smile while you are swaying.”

This the Gnome-Style Swaying Bamboo Technique.

It's Mushroom Time…

Munchkin.Back.View

With the heavy rains in July, we have had lots of wild mushrooms popping up on the farm.  The Stinkhorn otherwise known as bamboo pith or bamboo fungus (Phallus indusiatus) has been  a common one for us.  These are edible and we are perfectly happy to eat them.  I say this because I have seen strange looks from Non-Asian people who look too frightened to try this epicurean delight.

These mushrooms start off as an egg-shaped structure, commonly known as “Witches’ Eggs.”

You can pick them at this stage to eat; once cooked, they have a gooey texture.  They are alright (not great) if you are feeling adventurous…best pan-fried with onions and garlic.

Asian people eat the mushrooms at this stage when they become erect and rather phallic looking.  In the Asian Market, they are cultivated and sold dehydrated.

You can stir-fry them and put them in stews and soups.  Go on then…do something different today and find some of these lovely specimens in Toledo and cook them up for dinner!!  They are supposed to be an aphrodisiac!

Update.

We haven’t been writing lately because the Internet has been on and off with the bad storms.  Right now, it is on but I don’t know for how long so I will take this opportunity to write.

It has been absolutely pouring down and in the daytime, we have been wading about in ankle-deep puddles!  Needless to say that no one work can be done outside!  It is mostly raining at night  and early morning…I will remember to mark July on my calendar as “wet, wet, wet!!” to remind myself of this every year.  Otherwise, I will get frustrated and feel that I can’t get any work done…

Wise words from Gnome (whilst staring out of the window at gigantic puddles and grey skies for the last week):

“Hmmm…July is a time for contemplation.”

Munchkin replies with,

“What is there to think about?!!”

Copal Products At The Market.

Munchkin.with.SwordIt has been a few months since the new market opened in Punta Gorda, Toledo.  I will take more pictures next time for some of our readers that don’t live in Toledo.  For the town locals, this is to let you know that our Copal Medicinal Oil and Copal Medicinal Soap are available at Mrs. Juanita Bochub’s stall (Stall No.10).

Punta Gorda Market is now located centrally so it is within easy walking access.  Juanita has been selling our products for quite a while but I thought it was worth a reminder.  Juanita and I go back a long way; when we first started on the farm, we made coconut oil and she sold this at the market for us.

An Evening Out.

Liqueur.Tasting.TogetherYes, Shock! Horror!  We left our comfortable nest in the bush to go out for the evening.  We went to Belcampo for Green Drinks with some friends.  The scenery up there is spectacular; sipping on an ice cold drink whilst watching the sunset is certainly a pleasant experience!

The display at the bar is nice with all the greens from their garden.  This is Tim making a drink for me!

It was a great excuse to go out and it gave us the chance to dress up…Gnome’s mother had sent us some lovely new clothes (nice stuff…not our usual farm attire).

Not So Dry!

Munchkin.Back.View

Yippee!!  We had a good rain last night which filled up half of the tank.  And now it’s raining again so we should have the tank completely filled.  Good thing Gnome sorted this out:

Tank In Place.

We were so worried because the dry days seemed never-ending (it always feels like that every year).  At least now our poor shriveled tobacco plants will start growing again:

And the pond might start filling up…look…it has been reduced to a single puddle!

Hopefully with this extra bit of rain, our mangoes will get fat and juicy.

Munchkin And Gnome Update.

So Hot!!
So Hot!!

We are still here!  Lately the daily RealFeel of 50C (115F) has been absolutely awful.  We have been up at 3am doing our stuff in the cool of the morning (still RealFeel 30C/86F).  The heat has frazzled my brain and the inspiration to write just wasn’t there!

Gnome has been charging on full speed and managed to set up the water tank for the imminent (well, we hope) rains.  This is the new look tank in Belize called Best Tank:

New Water Tank.

I think that these tanks are made within the country so they have stopped importing the Rotoplast type.

I mentioned to Gnome:

“Hmmmm…I don’t really like the colour of these new tanks.  Quite bland.”

Gnome replied with:

“My dear, are you going back to your Ikea days when you wanted everything in spring green stripes or pastel blue?  I’m afraid that we don’t live like that anymore.”
