We have had heavy rains and we are surrounded by a sea of water, the Jacinto River is up and there are flood signs everywhere. The river floods onto our road every year and it looks like this occurrence is imminent. In addition to all this, the truck is behaving dodgy (oh how technical of me!) and the two tonne front gate is still done broke. In other words we are on forced house arrest!
There was a downpour lastnight so we couldn’t even get anything done on the farm. I was so frustrated and said to Gnome today:
“Aaaaaargh…the weather refuses to cooperate! Everything is conspiring against us!”
Gnome replied with an enigmatic smile:
“My dear, we must sway like the bamboo…learn to bend like the limbs of the bamboo…be flexible!”
In response to this, I lifted my arms up in the air and flailed them from side to side. Testily I said,
“Is that it???!!! I don’t feel any better!!”
Gnome:
“No dear you are not doing it right…you need to smile while you are swaying.”
The Flood Flies finally came last night and we were ready with Protocol Flood Flies still in place. Lock down started at 4pm and everyone (including the animals) were fed and watered by 5pm. Last minute shower and into the bedroom quick smart. Lights out! This morning, there was still some evidence of flood flies with their wings but not as much as previous years. Switching the lights off to reduce numbers really works and this year, I am actually not suffering from Post Traumatic Flood Flies Syndrome. Usually with the after-math of winged chaos, I am reduced to a depressed, quivering wreck armed with a vacuum cleaner in one hand and a snotty tissue in the other.
Phew…it’s all good! And so with rains come the planting. Gnome has bee planting sorghum:
We have planted more of the “brain” (Amorphophallus paeonilfolius) out:
Oh and Gnome has been cutting more houses for Coco-Prune Resort…there has been a sales boom and all the piggies want a luxury condo. Don’t try this at home guys…the table saw is done broke so Gnome is using a circular saw on a steel drum!! I know…cringe!!
But the Piggies want their million dollar condos! It was the Spa and Yoga that sold it!
We have been hearing all sorts of weather predictions and looking at reports on the Internet with forecasts of hot, dry weather…forever (well, it feels like that anyway). This morning we were sitting down with our cups of tea (can’t take the Scottish out of either of us…still like a cup of tea to hit the spot) and lo and behold! Grey clouds gathered right over us and it started raining. What a relief! It wasn’t torrential but it was enough for the plants and trees to quench their thirst for a wee while. This is one of the longest dry seasons that we can remember. Every year, the season tends to end abruptly and we are usually left thinking,
“Hey, hang on a few more days…or weeks…we haven’t done this and that..we haven’t done everything on our dry season list!”
Well, this year, it’s hanging on for a while so we have no excuses but to dig the trench in the pond…
This is to allow a catchment area for the tilapia when the pond dries up every year. We are doing it this year and Gnome is digging!
A lot of people wonder why we do our own work…a couple of ascetic wannabee farmers who like pain and suffering?
The truth is that we are actually both very healthy and fit from this lifestyle…a lifestyle that we like to promote to all our patients…we reckon that the only way to give advise is to do it (not just talk).
After digging a trench three feet wide and two feet deep today, Gnome said:
“Yes, I can eat as much as I want!”
Yes, indeed he can stuff his face with satisfaction with that smug look on his face!
Yippee!! We had a good rain last night which filled up half of the tank. And now it’s raining again so we should have the tank completely filled. Good thing Gnome sorted this out:
We were so worried because the dry days seemed never-ending (it always feels like that every year). At least now our poor shriveled tobacco plants will start growing again:
And the pond might start filling up…look…it has been reduced to a single puddle!
Hopefully with this extra bit of rain, our mangoes will get fat and juicy.
All the fruit trees on the farm will benefit from this splendid rain…what a relief!
Humans can’t get it right and the Internet definitely lets us down on weather forecasts. The plethora of animals making noises from frogs croaking to rain hawks cawing sometimes get it right. Wait for it…the most consistent sign of imminent rain (for us) has been the grader working on San Felipe Road. Guaranteed 97% with 3% Faith!. The grader came by today to move rocks about and flatten the road a bit. Standby for the torrential rain!!
We had an unexpected big rain on Saturday evening; it was great to see the new guttering work well with none of the usual leaks. I have found that lately, since we have been actively looking at the weather forecast, we have got nothing right! Two weeks ago, when there was a forecast of rains we quickly put our guttering up. Not a drop of rain. This time round: forecasts of endless bright sunny days so we didn’t bother emptying the big tank to put underneath the new guttering. What happens…big rain…with no available tank to fill. Gnome quickly ran out to shove a 55 gallon barrel underneath the gushing water.
This makes me think of an article that I read in an old English magazine from the 1980’s. The writer had mentioned that during World War 2, no weather reports were broadcasted from the United Kingdom in an effort to thwart possible enemy attack. This resulted in people reverting back to the old traditions in weather prediction including the study of the constellation of the stars, the sky colour at dusk and dawn, etc, etc.
Some people even listened to the different “moo’s” of cows to figure out the weather!
Now, I wouldn’t dismiss this as being too far fetched as…
We had for some time (when we didn’t have Internet) listened to certain bird calls which, in our personal observation, signified rain. The “rain-hawk” cawing is one example. We also noticed that the Wee Wee ants come out early if there are going to be evening rains. The other more obvious one is the croaking of frogs…we found that they only do this is unison when there is a surety of rain. Otherwise, they are deathly quiet apart from the random isolated croak.
There of course no absolutes but the observation of nature to help predict the weather is definitely worth looking at. Especially when the super-duper hi-tec forecasts haven’t been very helpful!
We have been waiting for the “Iguana Rains” for two days now. At 5pm today we had a slight drizzle but not enough to fill two large water tanks. C’mon then…let’s have a downpour, if not for us, but for the sake of the iguana population; they need wet ground to lay their eggs:
The Zazen duckies are also calling for rains through space and time; they need clean water for daily ablutions in the Zen Garden…it is imperative that the dabbling duckies are cleansed for meditation…
And the Paradise Piggies (aka Jedi Piggies, aka Ewok piggies…not officially, mind you) have jumped on the band wagon and are weee-weee-ing for water too.
It’s all in the name of a good cause!
Anyone know a Rain Dance that is guaranteed to work…100% scientifically proven, double-blind trial?!
We had our usual town day today and then stopped off at the hardware store to purchase one connector and a roll of teflon tape. These were two crucial pieces that were missing in the air-lift pump construction that stopped us from completing the full Gnome-Rig yesterday.
Gnome put the missing piece in and switched on the air-compressor. There was a moment of silence as we stared at the pipe coming out of the well. All of a sudden there was the glorious sound of water shooting out of the pipe…YAY!!! Hip Hip Hooray!! Respect To The Gnome. He Gnome-Rigged an air-lift pump all by himself!
And then at Gnome’s finest moment, the clouds gathered together above our house with the inevitable Sod’s Law rain. Ha-Ha!!
We celebrated with a glass of vernaccia; Gnome says that this particular wine that he has made tastes like local (vernacular) Sardinian wine which has a sherry like quality.
Mmmm…what a lovely way to celebrate. A little bit of sunshine in a glass.
Hello everyone!! It has been raining all day today so thankfully, our rain water shortage has been temporarily solved. The rainwater tank is almost half full and we have another full tank as back-up. Phew!! We are so pleased!!
Anyway, onto the subject of chili peppers…yesterday, was town day and it was a hectic run-around of seeing patients for the whole morning, meeting up with people for lunch and the usual in-between hailing of passerbys and acquaintances. Not to mention, the rushing around for supplies in between a packed day. By the time I got home at 4pm, I was exhausted. At this point, I started feeling lethargic and then it got worse because I started feeling sorry for myself. One thing led to another and I developed a headache, sore throat and a low-grade fever. I immediately recognised it as the beginnings of the ‘flu (or some sort of viral infection). Gnome knew there was a problem when I reached over to the computer to write a Blog post and I simply couldn’t even muster up the energy to type out the WordPress address. Gnome admonished me gently for being such an awful patient and told me to have a teaspoon of chili sauce, in a drink immediately.
I happened to have a glass of beer in front of me (therapeutic dosage to warm myself up of course…honest) so I stirred in a teaspoon of chili sauce and downed it. As soon as I drunk it, it really hit the spot and the I felt an immediate release in my sinuses and head. I felt so much better.
Gnome’s Medical Prescription: Beer
And one teaspoon of Chili sauce:
Culpeper describes this experience very nicely:
“…will so pierce the brain by flying up into the head through the nostrils, as to produce violent sneezings, and draw down abundance of thin rheum, forcing tears from the eyes…”
I went to bed soon after this, feeling nice and toasty. And so today, I still feel tired from fighting off the ‘flu and my energy levels are considerably lower. However, I have managed to keep the other symptoms at bay (fever, headache and cough) with a teaspoon of chili sauce in miso soup three times a day. By no means is this an instant cure-all but it does cut short the length of an ailment and lessons the symptoms so it is worth doing. I will probably continue this regime for the next 3 days at least. I have noticed that with natural remedies, it is not usually a once off dosage but rather a course.
Also, Chilis have nutritional value which can aid in mounting a proper immune response: vitamin A, C, E, B6, Potassium and Manganese and Riboflavin.
It is still raining here in Toledo…yay!! Have a Good Night everyone!!
Hi Everyone!! If you are a regular reader, you may remember that our well pump broke about 6 months ago and we have been relying on rain-water since then. Thankfully we have had rain water without much of a hitch since we live in the district of Belize with the highest rainfall. Coupled with hope, prayers and chorusing with the frogs, water has not been an issue….well, until recently. It has been so dry for 14 days now (this dryness is sooooo rare for this region and we are not in dry season) we are down to about half of a 550 gallon tank only so we are on Red Alert!! Bucket Washes and no showers.
The saga continues…
Early yesterday morning, Gnome noticed water dripping out of a hole in our water tank (our rainwater tank). Remember, there is no water in the well-pump tank. He went over to have a better look and discovered that a nail from the water tower had punctured through the base of the tank and we were fast losing our precious water. With Gnome swiftness, he used a hose-pipe to transfer the water into the empty well tank. Phew!! Thank-you Gnome for noticing…because if he had not noticed the dripping water, we would have no water left by the end of the day.
Okay, so we need rain. And we are looking at the weather report and there are no indications of rain. We are now looking further afield for hopeful signs through frog ribbitting, rain hawks, the man in the shop down the road and whatever takes our fancy.
Still no signs. Arrrrghhhh!!!
We still hope. The man in the shop said,
“It no look like it rain but sometime it come from nowhere!”
In anticipation, Gnome has patched up the water tank to receive rainwater.
Anyone know a good Rain Dance? Munchkin and Gnome are prepared to Boogey On Down!!
