Trouble With Jackfruit!

Trouble with jackfruit or rather should it be Trouble with Munchkin?  We have been getting so much jackfruit, I have been needing to process about 4 of them at a time every 2 to 3 days.  You will only understand how I feel if you have ever needed to clean a jackfruit yourself.  I don’t really want to complain because it is food but boy, is it a lot of work!!  The other day, I went a bit mad on Gnome because it was so maddening and that’s how mad I was because I had done two and I had two more to go and I couldn’t take it anymore!!

Fifty Pound Jackfruit

Anyway, he tried to be diplomatic and told me to leave the last two jackfruit alone and do them the next day.  He has his own work to do too and it isn’t like he is just sitting around doing nothing so it’s hard to get maddening mad!!

The next day, I tried it again with an all-new, well-behaved “thank the lord for our daily bread” Munchkin attitude.  I am leading you into a cloudy story with a silver-lining if you haven’t noticed already….

So far,  the jackfruit that I have been preparing are all the firm variety so they hard to cut through with a knife (blisters on the hands), the core is difficult to cut and each single piece of fruit requires to be pried off with the stubby fingers of a Munchkin.  Arrrgh!!!!

Oh and don’t forget the boiling of the seeds and peeling each seed one by one!  Oh and don’t forget the wine-making!  It is a whole day affair.

Who said farm life was about rainbows and unicorns (what unicorns??).  😉

Cleaned Jackfruit.

Okay, so I am so far in a good mood, thanking the lord…keeping the good mood going…and onto the fourth jackfruit.

And guess what?  It is the biggest one…it is humongous and I am expecting a two hour job.  It cuts like butter, flops open, the spine pops out and the fruit pop out too.  What an amazing revelation…this last jackfruit (from the same tree??) is completely different and has a soft, cotton-like texture.  It is sooooo easy to prepare and I did it in half the time.  Afterwards, I told Gnome about it and we realised that when we planted the jackfruit “tree” we stuck five seeds into into the ground.  Two of them germinated, grew up and intertwined giving the appearance of one tree hence the reason for two different varieties seeming to appear on a single tree.

This is the other type of jackfruit which is soft in texture.  If you like it, you would describe it as buttery; if you don’t like it, you would say it was snotty.  Nonetheless, easier to clean and if you are making wine, the texture is not an issue.  On the whole, it was easy peasy compared to preparing the other type.

Soft Jackfruit.

Cotton-like, soft variety:

Jackfruit.

Okay moral of the story.  Stay in a good mood and something good (donum bonum/ good gift) can happen.  Well, that’s Munchkin and Gnome philosophy and it works if you do it.  It makes sense but harder to stay in a good mood (all the time) in reality.  Got to persist though….

Picnicking on the Farm!

Munchkin and Gnome spend every single waking and un-waking moment together (because we actually like each other).  Anyway, Gnome tells me the other day that we don’t spend enough “quality time” together.  He says that we are always doing stuff like cleaning up the farm and sorting the animals out and we are always running an agenda.  Okay, I had to stop for a moment and realise that everyday was becoming samey-samey and we were just operating a routine action plan.  We do get into a militant rut sometimes and it is good to just stop to relax and enjoy.

So we changed things around a bit.  We stopped and had a picnic at the rosewood stand.

Picnic Site.

Of course we used our new gasifier stove and made some coffee:

Making Coffee.

This time we used African oil palm nuts as our burning source since the tree was handily located at the picnic site:

African Oil Palm Kernels for Stove.

We did indeed have a lovely time.  We should do this more often!

Have We Done Enough?

This post is written for Gnome.  We’ve spent the last week or so cooped up in the house (more rains and wetness all around).  He asked me yesterday, “…have we done enough dear…I don’t think we’ve done enough…”  GUFFAW!!!  Shrieky Fury Munchkin!!  Okay this is what we’ve done in seven days: canned 57 jars of sorghum, canned 114 jars of black beans, made two lots of soap, planted chrysanthemums and fennel out, made soursop cider (56 bottled and under pressure), made sorghum and jackass bitters beer and making coconut castile soap as we speak! WHAT!!  I told Gnome that he needed a reality check and that we were doing plenty.  I think I ranted, raved and shook my fists at him enough for him to get the idea!!

So this is what we have been doing…

Canned Sorghum.
Straining Sorghum Beer.
Bottled Soursop Cider.
Toasting Sorghum for Beer.

Oh and gathered some wild papayas to make relish:

Wild Papayas.

Studying the life cycle of butterflies for fun too:

Caterpillars.

Now I do recall when we worked in the Emergency Department in good old Royal Darwin Hospital that the average number of patients seen per doctor was about 25 in an 8 hour shift.  He used to see about 40 patients in a shift.

We’re not running a hospital my dear!  It’s just a few ducks and geese flapping about.  No emergencies here. Remember that we chose this life-style to live a more tranquil life.  You know…the spiritual quest thingy-me-bobs that we go on about…and the philosophy and all that stuff….

Anyway, after my silly little rant I went outside and was backed into a corner by Chiney-goosie and Rebel-goosie (yes, they have names!).  They sneered and threatened me, pecking fiercely at my ankles; I had to fight them within an inch of my life (just exaggerating a bit but they were behaving like hooligans).  Anyway, I ran back to Gnome and wailed,

“Oh Gnome!!  The geese cornered and attacked me!!”

Gnome’s response: “Oh that’s great dear, it means that it is breeding season soon.”

WRONG ANSWER!! And then I started Fury Munchkin again….

Back On-Line…

Yesterday (Sunday) was quite a day!!  It started off with very early morning rains with  black, heavy grey skies and it poured down all day.  There was a power cut in the wee hours of the morning (no idea what time it was but it was still very dark).  In fact there was no electricity all day (and we were not expecting it to come back because the weather was so awful …I don’t blame the BEL guys for not wanting to come out in torrential rain…and it was a Sunday and nothing happens on a Sunday here).

Oh, and we also got flooded in at the Jacinto junction so there was no way of getting onto the Highway (unless you swam or procured a canoe).

We were stuck.  We couldn’t do anything!!  So we sat with lots of candles (it was very dark inside and the sun was completely blocked by black puffy clouds) and talked all day.  It was actually quite refreshing not to have a computer (with noise, constant clicking of the mouse, silly stuff on FB and the constant Internet distractions).

It was lovely to have nothing.  The silence was welcome and we really enjoyed each other’s company.  I am thankful for these days that affirm that “we don’t need anything except for each other.”  Sometimes, you just think it is it is sentimental stuff that is just things that you say without meaning it.  Well I mean it…Munchkin and Gnome really do get on well with each other!!

The electricity (surprisingly) came back on about 6pm.  We were just about to call it a day and go to bed!!

Rain!!

On a different note, Gnome has unfortunately hurt his hand (tried to lift a very heavy thing, lifted the heavy thing and ignored the pain in his hand whilst lifting the heavy thing).  He is currently out-of-action with regards to physical, heavy work on the farm.  Family (particularly Gnome’s Mother) and Friends, please do not be alarmed.  This just means that he has sit around for the next few days until his hand gets better.

Twisting With Gnome.

I think it always good to encourage everyone to be artistic; it is a form of expression.  I have been trying to help Gnome make the time to relax and do more activities just for the sake of passion and fun.  With some of the physical labour on the farm, he does sometimes feel that the work is never-ending…it just ends up being a to-do list.  He actually does the farm work out of necessity (who else is going to do it?) and to keep himself very healthy and strong.  Pulling out heavy logs and brush-mowing are not his primary goals in life.

His likes are very simple though.  he loves growing vegetables especially tomatoes and aubergines.  And one of the things that he does for sheer pleasure is just to walk about his garden, taking the time to look at the fruits of his labour.

Growing Tomatoes.

He enjoys the process of making things.  He likes to make wine: the pressing of fruit, the fermentation and bubbling away and then waiting for something special.  It’s all about time and love and I don’t mean it in a wishy-washy sort of way…it’s solid.  It’s not for the end product anyway because he rarely drinks.

Wine-Making.

Another thing that I am encouraging him to do is to grow tobacco. This is again about making something good and proper.  He enjoys the curing process which takes about a year: hanging it up inside the house (yes, we need a barn or we’ve ended up making our house into a barn!), the flavouring, curing and blending.

Hanging Up Tobacco.
Sliced Tobacco.

This allows Gnome to express himself and these are his arts.  Yes, he will have lovely, aromatic pipe tobacco and cigars in the end but its the artful journey that releases the joyful spirit.

Tobacco Plant.

Gnome has been making rope twists with his tobacco; it is a form of pressure curing.  Once he’s done his work of art, he gives them to Munchkin to store away for a year or more.

Tobacco Twist.

I have written about the history of tobacco.  Click on link if interested.  Personally, I really enjoy the presence of the plant (not sure if you understand what I mean).  You almost form an affinity towards certain plants and they draw you to them and you can sit for long lengths of time just staring at the beautiful velvety leaves or inhaling the spicy aromatic scent of the flowers.  That’s what I mean.

These are the things that we should be doing in our lives.  It’s a fine balance of labour properly done to meet your necessities (shelter/food/clothing/energy requirements) and after that, we should foster an attitude of relaxation and enjoyment without filling up our lives with only monetary orientated deeds.  And we need each other to remind ourselves that we are supposed to be having fun on this journey of self-discovery.

Work is Never-Ending!

It’s Sunday and we’ve still working on a million and one things.  Gnome asked, “…where’s the fun??”

Oops, these blog posts are supposed to inspire other people to live a farming lifestyle like us.

Gnome’s working on the veranda, pulling out posts and putting them into holes.  I tended to the animals (goosies and guinea pigs mostly) this morning and watered the 40 or so buckets in our garden.  After that I potted some sage and tobacco plants.  I’ve just been clearing a big mess in the old plant nursery where the old posts were located. There are all sorts of crap: some of the stuff is destined for the dump but I have to pick through it all to save the useful stuff…like buckets and planting bags.  I stopped to make lunch (shitake and bitter gourd soup with lentils….still have to eat well despite being busy).  And Gnome’s  still sweating away outside knocking things together.

And now I have to pack some soap and products and….oh, and then there is the Chocolate Festival to prepare for next weekend….

So, I think that it’s time for an afternoon break.  I have to keep in mind that life on a farm comes in cycles of busy and quiet and there’s no in-between!!  The important thing is to pull yourself out of it once in while and remember, we’re supposed to be having fun!!

Okay, goosie time!!  Look, the yellow wellies work…the goosies think that we are one of them!!

Hope y’all out there are having a lovely Sunday!!

More Farm Stuff!

Hello, Munchkin here again!  We had a terrible week of heavy rains and now it’s starting to get drier.  I shouldn’t complain but I will!  I’ve been having an awful time trying to get things done on the farm because it is sooooo wet.  I just end up getting covered in water, mud, dirt and feeling sorry for myself.  The other day, I thought of a mantra to keep myself going and it went like this: “I am a store-house of creativity….I am a store-house of creativity….I am a store-house of creativity.”  Ha-Ha, I need to laugh at myself now because when I actually write it down, it sounds like a repetitive loop which totally lacks lustre and inventiveness!

Anyway, yesterday, whilst walking around on the farm, caked in wetness and dirt, I wasn’t exactly feeling great.  Instead of the mantra, I was wailing and flailing with occasional huffing and puffing!! Gnome hid behind a tree nearby and stuck his yellow welly out at me and said cheekily:

“Munchkin!!  Are you a store-house of creativity??!!”

He guffawed and laughed at my mantra whilst shaking about in a little dance.  His yellow wellies were flailing up in the air…dare I say…like River Dance.  It was such a stupid sight that I did have to laugh and that snapped me out of my dourness.  So, I did get stuff done (happily) in the end…

Transplanted the tomato plants:

Tomato Seedlings.

Cleaned the Pigtail buckets…I get these from town and they start piling up under the house until I get fed up and do a huge wash up.

Pigtail Bucket.

Did the laundry in the Gnomified washing machine:

Spent some quality time with the little creatures on the farm.  Whilst doing all that, I forgot about repeating the mantra and just got on with it.  Better when the brain doesn’t get in the way sometimes!!

Finding The Creativity To Write.

munchkin-cute-look

Gnome just saw this title and tells me that I go through a 3 month cycle where I go through very busy times (doing outside farm work, making products, cooking, patients, etc) and then I find that I have no energy to write anything.  He says this goes on for a little while until I start going on about finding creativity and then I write a post like this.

Well my response to his observation was,

“I don’t think so…”

munchkin-sexy-back-shot

He’s such a smart-arse!!  Unfortunately, he is correct and now I am on the upward cycle where I feel that I need to write more regularly.  I have to re-evaluate my reasons for writing; it is to keep a journal and to remind myself of what I do and why I do things.  I don’t want to run automatically through my life and do things for no good reason except to keep busy.  I think about life a lot, the way that we live it and the way that I can live with significance in my actions.  This is deep Munchkin talking…she doesn’t come out much because she’s too busy writing inane blogs to entertain people.

Gnome says in response to this:

“That sounds like the beginning of a thought…are you taking this somewhere?”

Munchkin: “No.”

Well that was a conversation stopper if I ever saw one!!

Swaying Bamboo Technique.

Giant.Green.BambooWe have had heavy rains and we are surrounded by a sea of water, the Jacinto River is up and there are flood signs everywhere.  The river floods onto our road every year and it looks like this occurrence is imminent.  In addition to all this, the truck is behaving dodgy (oh how technical of me!) and the two tonne front gate is still done broke.  In other words we are on forced house arrest!

There was a downpour lastnight so we couldn’t even get anything done on the farm.  I was so frustrated and said to Gnome today:

“Aaaaaargh…the weather refuses to cooperate!  Everything is conspiring against us!”

Munchkin Sick and Feeling Sorry for Herself!

Gnome replied with an enigmatic smile:

“My dear, we must sway like the bamboo…learn to bend like the limbs of the bamboo…be flexible!”

Gnome.Another.Look.GreenIn response to this, I lifted my arms up in the air and flailed them from side to side.  Testily I said,

“Is that it???!!!  I don’t feel any better!!”

Munchkin.Another.Funny.ShotGnome:

“No dear you are not doing it right…you need to smile while you are swaying.”

This the Gnome-Style Swaying Bamboo Technique.

Blowing Hot And Cold!

Munchkin.Another.Funny.Shot

What a weird day for weather…one minute it was dull and grey and then the next minute it was hot and sunny.   And it was so blustery. Make up your mind!!  To add to all this, the power was going on and off.  As soon as it switched on, I would get up to try to get something done and when it went off, I had to sit down again.  It was like musical chairs!!  Arrrghhhh!!!

Gnome had a better attitude; well, at least he was in a better mood by the end of day even although we both had an unproductive day.

“I am going to sit here and not move.”

Glowing.Gnome

Well, I guess we are not all as spiritually enlightened as the Gnome!!  Despite the ups and downs, the farm is our constancy…still producing lots of lovely stuff;
