Slice Of Life.

New.Munchkin.Gnome.Yellow.Boots

I was thinking that the best way to describe our blog is that it is a “Slice of Life.” They are snippets of conversations, ideas, farm life and our way of life.  With humour thrown in for extra good measure.

This snippet is a perfect example of the Tao of Munchkin, Gnome and Panda.

The other day, Panda came at 8am in the morning to assist Gnome in the construction of a bamboo shelter for growing potatoes.  There was no pre-amble and “let’s have a cup of tea first, mate.”  Gnome and Panda went off to the bamboo to cut and haul.  Everything was measured to the correct size.  Holes were dug in the ground and work was done without the need for idle chit-chat.

The structure was made in 6 hours (separated into two mornings of 3 hours).  Panda, still new to the “The Way of Munchkin and Gnome” kinda looked at us funny and asked politely what farm work had to be done for the afternoons.

Munchkin reply:

“Our farming way of life encompasses a way of life.  It is not about working like a dog for 8 hours a day…”

Gnome added,

“It’s all about doing what you want to do…with focus, discipline and motivation.”

So Gnome suggested that Panda take the extra cut bamboo home and, “have fun with it…make something cool…maybe some blinds or something.”

Panda, who happens to like working with bamboo (well, he is a Panda after all) was very pleased that this way of life also offered creativity and leisure:

“This is great.  I like that!  I’m off then!”

He said this as he slung the bamboo poles over his shoulder.

Zazen Piggies!!

Mayor Gnome Gets it Done!

Mayor Gnome was true to his word and moved the piggies to the Zen Garden this morning.  The Big Move:

Master Zazen Duckie greeted the piggies and gave a rousing welcome speech to the new residents.

At the end of the speech, the Duckies invited them for a group meditation.  This is what the piggies said:

“We’ve still got some packing to do love…and then we need to eat a whole bunch of grass.  Maybe see you laterz!!”

Zazen Duckie replied with:

“I see you need to learn discipline…that is so.”

Still stuck!

Munchkin.Puffed.Face

Interesting that we are still stuck on the farm but for other reasons this time.  About a week ago, half the gate fell over; it’s a really heavy gate made from sturdy hardwood but unfortunately the post has been destroyed by termites.  We didn’t see this happening because the termites had cleverly burrowed into the wood and were digesting the wood from the inside…on the outside it looked perfectly normal.

The gates can be moved with brute Gnome strength and so any trip out entails the moving of a tonne of wood back and forth.

So we have had to think seriously about taking trips out of the farm…basically no joy rides or “…let’s go out and get something quickly.”

The Gate.

So the other day, just in good humour, I said to Gnome:

“Darling, we have run out of sugar to put in our tea.”

Gnome replied rather facetiously with,
“Well, would you like me to move a 2 tonne gate and run out to get a cup of sugar for you, my dear!”

The Trials of Munchkin and Gnome Continue….

Back To Work!

About two weeks ago, we had a really bad storm which uprooted one of our trees which then landed on the roof of our nursery.  It caused devastation with branches falling everywhere and it ended up blocking our usual walking route through the farm.

Fallen Tree.

When we saw the extent of the mess, we could see the amount of work involved, we looked at each other and said at the same time,

“Oh No!!”

Together.Munchkin.Annoyed

And so we procrastinated for a while plus luckily for us, the weather wasn’t cooperating so there was never a ‘right time’ to clean up.  Our Munchkin and Gnome form of procrastination included re-vamping the web-site, making copious amount of pasta to dry and store, designing new products, seeing patients and stuffing ourselves with mangoes.  Oh, and I am learning to touch type!

Anyway yesterday was the day and we just got out there and did it!  Here are some pictures:

We managed to get the tree off the roof!

We cut up all the wood and it was my job to gather it all up for mulch.

All done and as Gnome surveyed the surroundings with a sigh  of relief he said nonchalantly,

“Oh, now I need to fix up the nursery.”

Catch Up.

Munchkin.RunningThe Flood Flies finally came last night and we were ready with Protocol Flood Flies still in place.  Lock down started at 4pm and everyone (including the animals) were fed and watered by 5pm.  Last minute shower and into the bedroom quick smart.  Lights out!  This morning, there was still some evidence of flood flies with their wings but not as much as previous years.  Switching the lights off to reduce numbers really works and this year, I am actually not suffering from Post Traumatic Flood Flies Syndrome.  Usually with the after-math of winged chaos, I am reduced to a depressed, quivering wreck armed with a vacuum cleaner in one hand and a snotty tissue in the other.

Phew…it’s all good!  And so with rains come the planting.  Gnome has bee planting sorghum:

We have planted more of the “brain” (Amorphophallus paeonilfolius) out:

Oh and Gnome has been cutting more houses for Coco-Prune Resort…there has been a sales boom and all the piggies want a luxury condo.  Don’t try this at home guys…the table saw is done broke so Gnome is using a circular saw on a steel drum!!  I know…cringe!!

But the Piggies want their million dollar condos!   It was the Spa and Yoga that sold it!

Money Can't Buy Everything!

Together.PointingYou would think that money would buy you everything that you needed; not necessarily so… as we invested in new super-duper sized guttering for the house recently.  We had a test run with a little rain last week and it was dripping all over the place!  Gnome went out to inspect and found that that every single joint had warped with the heat of the sun!

Guttering.Gnome.on.the.Roof

We’ve managed to rectify the matter by drilling screws through the joints in order to secure them in place.  As you can well image, Gnome was frustrated and disappointed.

“Even when you pay for something, you still can’t get quality!”

Gnome.Thinking

Since then he has been sizing up the giant bamboo in the corner of our property.

Giant Green Bamboo.

Mmmm…it looks like we have no choice but to resort to Giant Bamboo Gutters or Gnome Gutters TM!!  If we want quality, we’ve got to do it ourselves!!  A Gnome’s work is never done…

Munchkin And Gnome Update.

So Hot!!
So Hot!!

We are still here!  Lately the daily RealFeel of 50C (115F) has been absolutely awful.  We have been up at 3am doing our stuff in the cool of the morning (still RealFeel 30C/86F).  The heat has frazzled my brain and the inspiration to write just wasn’t there!

Gnome has been charging on full speed and managed to set up the water tank for the imminent (well, we hope) rains.  This is the new look tank in Belize called Best Tank:

New Water Tank.

I think that these tanks are made within the country so they have stopped importing the Rotoplast type.

I mentioned to Gnome:

“Hmmmm…I don’t really like the colour of these new tanks.  Quite bland.”

Gnome replied with:

“My dear, are you going back to your Ikea days when you wanted everything in spring green stripes or pastel blue?  I’m afraid that we don’t live like that anymore.”

Water Update!

The Magic of Mayor Gnome.
The Magic of Gnome.

This is a Friday night so I don’t suppose I need to write anything of great consequence.  However, this is important to us since we have managed to solve our water issues on the farm.  Hooray!!  The smaller tubing worked for the compressed air and the air-lift pump works great.  Thanks to Gnome for Belize Rigging…it helps to have brains on a farm…it makes all the difference in finding elegant solutions.

Lining Up The Bananas For The Iguana Rains!

Munchkin.with.UmbrellaWe’ve been working all weekend to get our new gutters up to catch the rains tomorrow.

Working On Guttering.
Working On Guttering.

AccuWeather have forecasted rains for Monday and Tuesday.  Metaphorically speaking, we were lining up “bananas” because, if you are familiar with Belizean construction, nothing is straight.  Gnome used a laser level (yes, ha-ha…what a joke!) to line up the gutters but discovered that he had to strip it back down because the roof was not straight.  After much sweating and roof gymnastics, he lined the gutters  against the line of the roof which ended up having a slight downward angle to the right anyway.  This is actually quite amusing because the downward spout used to point towards the left!  That’s why the gutter leaked in so many places!

So, Gnome had to climb on the roof and perform all manner of gymnastics to get the gutters up…

Gnome On The Roof.

At one point he said,

“It’s scary up here!!”

It's Scary Up On The Roof!
It’s Scary Up On The Roof!

And I replied,

“Yeah, it’s scary looking up at you!”

All the hard work has been done…now we just have to wait to see if it actually rains!  This rain which usually occurs once during the dry season is known locally as the “Iguana Rains” because it is supposed to soften the ground for iguanas to lay their eggs.

Go on then…time to lay eggs!

Zen Duckie Coup Is Ready!

Together

The Zen Garden is ready for the Zazen duckies  and they are just in time for a Full Moon Meditation.

Happy Duckies!
Happy Duckies!

What perfect timing!  The duckies wish to thank Mayor Gnome for his superb workmanship and stamina.

Mayor Gnome.

The Duckie Monastery is defined by specially chosen rocks and every single rock in the centrally placed pond was hand-picked and laid down by Mayor Gnome himself.  Within the grounds century plants have been placed at each corner and there is a  beautiful south-facing kenip tree which will provide dappled shade for meditation in the afternoon.

The duckies are very pleased and are ready for their 12 hour marathon meditation:

“We are ready to contemplate the meaning of life.”
