A Duckie Classical Education.

Hello, everyone, here’s an update on our surprise lone duckie that came out of a failed incubator project (because the cat sat on the incubator!).  Yes, I know, the pitfalls of having animals on a farm!!

Duckie!!

Just to give you a quick background on our duckies, of the mallard type, we had to incubate the eggs because these ducks refused to set.  Aha…you might say (if you know anything about the duckie world)…Why didn’t you use the local broody ducks (of the Muscovy type) to set?  And, Aha once again…the pitfalls of having animals on the farm…we have a dog with a ferocious appetite for muscovy ducks!

Anyway, to get to the point: we have, in the past, incubated duck eggs with success.  However, we found ourselves somewhat at a loss in being duckie parents.  We were inexperienced, young and ignorant of The Way of The Duckie Dabble.   The result was a bunch of useless duckies waiting for corn mash at the end of each day with no knowledge of eating the good things in life like slugs, caterpillars, ants, creepy crawlies and grass.  What a disaster!!

Anyway, we have spent many a day observing The Way of The Duckie Dabble and this is the All New Munchkin & Gnome Classical Duckie Education.

  1. It’s important to keep duckie in a safe, warm environment where he can freely survey the outside world.  We used a fish tank with a 100 watt bulb.
Warm Secure Environment.

2. Spend lots and lots of quality time with duckie.  At Day 2, Start him on a diet of protein (we used boiled eggs) and lots of chopped greens.  Let him splash about in a bowl of water like a duckie.

Splashing Duckie.

3. From Day 3, allow supervised walks so he gets used to pecking at creepy crawlies and eating green things.  According to Gnome, it helps to wear yellow wellies so  that he thinks you are just one of his kind!

4. Introduce Duckie to other farm members in a controlled manner:

Meet the Cat.

5.  It is of utmost importance in a Duckie Classical Education to introduce other animals (or cultures) into his everyday world as quickly as possible.  From Day 7, take Duckie to the Piggie Creche (9am to 5pm) for pre-school education. This will enable fluency in a foreign language at a young age.

Pre-school.

So far, Duckie is doing very well!!

Duckie Tales!!

Sorry we haven’t written much! Getting into the Christmas Spirit.

Anyway, duckie is doing well in emergency SCDU (Special Care Duckie Unit….Doctor’s Joke!!  Cat is also doing well!   Ha-Ha!!

Friends??

Are they friends?  Gnome says a resounding, “NO.”

Cat Likes To Look at Duckie!!

So, I can’t let duckie out to talk to the cat??

Gnome says, “NO.”

Against All Odds!

We have a Baby!!  Yes, against all odds we have a baby duckie!  We haven’t had much luck with the duckie breeding program because of gender issues (this is true, by the way, the male duck paired up with a male goose and wouldn’t have anything to do with the female ducks).   Anyway, we have a new drake on the block that is satisfying the harem of ducks.  However, none of the ducks wanted to set so Gnome made an incubator.

We put 12 eggs in the incubator (Gnome-rigged, of course with temperature control) last month and eagerly waited.  Gnome candled them at the beginning and all of them seemed to be viable.  Towards the end of the incubation period (takes 28 days to hatch), disaster struck when we realised that the cat had been jumping on top of the incubator because it was such a comfy warm spot, causing the temperature to fluctuate, subsequently spoiling the eggs.  We were so disappointed and gave up on the project as an “act of cat.”  However, there was one egg we had put in 5 days later than the rest which was due to hatch today…we woke up this morning to:

“…peep….peep…peep.”

Yes, we have one lone duckie!  Awwwhhhh….soooooo cute….

New Baby Duckie!

Another baby picture:

We have set up an emergency brooding area in a fish tank with a 100 watt lamp to keep it warm.  He’s just had his first feed and seems to be doing okay!  A bit lonely but we are keeping it company…

Everything But The Cat!

munchkin-back-view.png

Every morning, one of the first things that I do is to harvest food for the day and usually just  enough for the day so it stays fresh…no need to be shoving anything in the fridge.  Actually we only have a tiny fridge for pharmaceuticals…no veggies, fruit and condiments allowed!  Morning harvest:

The leafy greens are chaya and to the front are some carambola (starfruit).  The round yellow fruit, at the back are sour peach. The banana leaf has some wild mushroom (Schiziphylum commune).  So, Gnome asked me:

“What do we have to eat?”

I replied and pointed to the table of offerings:

“Everything but the cat!”

I Wrote Two Posts Yesterday…

gnome-funny-face.png

Hee-hee-hee.  The Munchkin didn’t realise that she was writing from my WP account (twice, no less!) and sooooo kindly ended up writing my posts for me.

So, here is my third post in two days!!!  Yey, I think I have done my job and I should get one of these:

Thank you all for supporting the Gnome…

Who’s Blog is it Anyway?

Munchkin Here!!  Where’s the Panda…I thought he was supposed to be writing some stuff about jungle living.  And Gnome, what are you up to?  Oh, Gnome tells me he’s got nothing to write about.  Okay, I’m going to be pulling this face until you both start writing on the blog.  Get the picture?!

Time for Clarification…

Gnome.Writing.in.the.Library

Hello All:

This is a quick clarification…

The only one with the mouth ulcer (which has now gone, thanks to serosi tea…and not eating deep fried yum-yums….) was the Munchkin.  The Gnome didn’t have them and neither did the Panda.  The one who threw the wobbly and has been chopping  was the Panda, not the Munchkin (well, not this time, anyway).

For those of you that didn’t realise this, there is one woodland creature (a Panda) and two deep earth creatures (the Munchkin and the Gnome) who are writing on this blog.  Don’t get us confused!!

The Munchkin lives with the Gnome and both of them get up to mischief in the bush (since we both came up from deep beneath the earth to live a new life on the surface).  The Munchkin is cute, bossy and likes to be in charge.  The Gnome is philosophical, surly, skinny and generally not very friendly.  Both are not very popular, if Blog stats are any indication to go by.

The Panda is the new kid on the block and he is trying to find enlightenment by tempering his spirit with hard physical labour, isolation and discovering his own thoughts.  He is emotional and is learning to be in touch with his feelings.  He likes working with bamboo.  He is also very, very popular and really pumps-up our blog stats each and every time he puts up a post!!  🙂

He is so popular that we are going to have to update our About Us page to include him and give him some credit.

Okay, everybody on the same page now?

Unusual Edible Greens!

It’s official: The Blogging Wars have started and Man-Shack Panda is in the lead!  If this keeps up, we’ll be making Panda Appreciation Products (PAP) as an off-shoot of  Casa Mascia.

Gnome: “Dearest, there are no blogging wars…it’s all in your head!”

Munchkin: “I know…but the mere whiff of competition gets the stats up!”

Munchkin.Feeling.Rightous

Anyway, let’s not get waylaid by interpersonal blogging.  This blog is about living in the bush and the wonderful things that come with the change in lifestyle.  Here are some unusual greens from the farm.

Jute leaves are very nice to eat steamed or stir-fried.

Oooohhh…horse radish leaves…tastes like mustard:

We bought some chia seed from the supermarket and managed to grow them.  They have mint-like fragrance and makes a nice tasting tea:

C’mon then, give Munchkin some Likes!!  She is sticking to the true essence of the Blog!!

So, How Do I Get Out of It…

Mayor Gnome Shows Grace.

Panda’s new popularity might workout well for me too (hee-hee-hee); he gets the self-esteem boost, groupies, popularity, people thinking he is really cool and “spiritually advanced” because he can talk about his emotions, in touch with his feminine side, so to speak.  AND (this is more important!) I can stop writing these stupid posts and do some real work for a change….the plot thickens…

So this morning, to Munchkin:

“The Panda is doing really well, isn’t he?”Gnome.Funny.Face

M:  “Yes, I’m glad we are getting him out of his shell…”Munchkin.Drinking

G:  “I just thought of a great idea…”Mayor Gnome. Gets Raw.

“Yeeeaaaahhhh, what?”Munchkin.Upsidown.Upset

“I don’t want to take the lime light away from him by writing my dumb posts…how about I take a break for a while (I can do some extra work) and let him experience the joy of popularity?”Gnome with Enigmatic Smile.

Needle-Work With Munchkin and Gnome.

Together.Pointing

It’s too funny!!  Panda is now the official celebrity of our blog!!  After the weekend wobbly post, our stats are booming.  I guess Munchkin and Gnome have to take a back seat…so what fun and exciting offerings do we have….hmmmm….this post is on needlework.  I can hear you all groan and say, “these guys…they are two boring fogies in the bush!”

Well I am dying to tell you that Gnome is crocheting a beautiful blanket:

Start of a Blanket.
Start of a Blanket.

It’s a basket weave pattern and the picture does not do it justice. It is 8 foot wide so Gnome diligently does one row a day which takes one hour.  He is aiming for an 8 foot length blanket so we have calculated that at this rate, he will finish it by dry season (April/May) next year!  We definitely won’t be using it at that time so we will have to store it away for next winter.  Best things come to those who wait.

So, Gnome is teaching me to crochet.  I am a knitter and have had disastrous lessons from Gnome…this was about 15 years ago  and I remember getting terribly upset and I telling Gnome he was an awful teacher,

"You're an Awful Teacher!"
“You’re an Awful Teacher!”

This time round, the lessons have been great and I have picked up crochet really quickly.  I told Gnome that he wasn’t such a bad teacher after all, and wondered in amazement at what had changed after all these years.  This is what he said:

“Dearest…I have not changed in the slightest.  You have changed.  Before you were rebellious and contumacious.  Now you actually listen!”

Gnome.Smiling

Oh.  He’s such a smart-arse and the worse thing is, he’s right.

munchkin-cute-shot.png

Anyway…next exciting project for two boring fogies in the bush is crocheting pineapple doilies!!  They will look great at our camp ground by the pond…Ha-Ha!!  Imagine us sipping cups of tea and eating cucumber sandwiches!  Doilies are a must!!

Now we have to find some fine mercerised cotton thread in Belize.  Hmmm…we may have to take up spinning….
