On Fuel Additives.

When you cut back on all your expenses to the point where there is not much else to cut out, you may find that it is the time when you start trying to save money on fuel.  When you are in a secure, salaried job — the wageslave — the dollars in savings or losses you make in price fluctuations is meaningless.  When you are not a wageslave you learn to look at your vehicle in terms of distances, service costs, tyres…vague terms in the conciousness of the normal person who does not get paid-by-service.  This is where I am now; there is not much left to cut back on and fuel is one of the few picks left.

So, to save a few bucks and mostly just for the fun, I’ll mess around with some additives to see if it works.

This is the formula that works for me in Belize with the local diesel found at the pump.

In every five gallons of diesel, dissolve thoroughly one naphthalene moth ball,  30ml of dry acetone, 30ml of xylene and 30ml of 5W-30 Pure Synthetic Motor Oil.  Apologies for mixing up SI units with Imperial.

I am blessed with the bias of wanting this to work, as this is my predilection:  the engine sounds smoother and the temperature gauge is cooler.  In terms of mileage, say I went from getting 185km for five gallons to 225km for five gallons.  Like I said, I want it to work and am willing to keep on doing it…maybe it is a way to ritualise something mundane.  So be it.

If you have the same predilections as me, it may be worth a try.
